BLOG| The DOs and DON'Ts of Studying Online

Studying online can seem both liberating and daunting. You can study whenever you want, and however you choose! But you do have to be the one to set time aside, and make yourself work. It can be hard work! It’s also so easy to slip up or forget. We all have the best intentions, but it can be hard to keep it up.

So, to help you, one of our lecturers, Colm Foley wrote a quick guide of the DOs and DON’Ts. What to do and what not to do while you’re studying online. Colm also wrote a blog about passing your exam the first time, which you could find incredibly helpful! Colm has had many prizewinners in professional accountancy exams so you should definitely take note of his words of wisdom. We hope these tips will help you with your StudyOnline.ie journey.

DOs

  • Make time to view and take notes on the online lecture.
  • Repeat and view video as many times as required to get an understanding of the topic.
  • Contact the lecturer with queries on the video or past exam questions. Be specific with the query details. The more specific the query, the better the answer the tutor can provide.
  • Treat the video session like a classroom by removing unnecessary distractions so that your concentration levels remain high.
  • Attempt all the homework and mock exams set by the Tutor.
  • Listen back to videos whilst travelling to work. It makes a productive use of deadtime.

DON’Ts

  • Be reluctant about contacting the lecturer.
  • Cram all your study at the end, as the exams are approaching. Increase in stress levels is guaranteed if you do this.
  • Get distracted by Youtube, Facebook whilst viewing videos. Ask yourself would you browse through Facebook if you were in class?
  • Be reluctant to make your own notes in addition to the notes supplied by the Tutor.
  • Overlook the need to practice past exam questions. Despite the course being provided digitally, you still need to use traditional methods to practice and become exam ready.

So there you have them! A short list of DOs and DON’Ts, so you can get the most out of your study online experience! If you utilise theses as much as you can, you’ll be flying along in no time!
Best of luck!
